An Ode to Superhero Movies
I’ve wanted to reflect on the current state of superhero movies for a while now. It seems like it’s easy to forget that as little as 15 years ago, we were still without an ‘X-Men’ film—let alone a full suite of Marvel spin-off features. We were still contending with Batman & Robin; you could be forgiven for thinking maybe Hollywood would never get a decent super-flick to surpass 70s-epic ‘Superman’ or Tim Burton’s 1989 ‘Batman’ for sheer overarching quality. Turns out, it was just a matter of...Advertising as A Sci Fi Evil - See the Trailer for 'Branded'
Advertising as the bad guy isn't a new theme in Sci Fi. If you've ever heard of a book called 'The Space Merchants', then you know what I'm talking about. If you've never heard about 'The Space Merchants', written by Cyrll Kornbluth and Frederik Pohl, I urge you do so as soon as possible - it's one of the all time greats from the 'Golden Age' of science fiction (before sparkly vampires). If you know about the films of John Carpenter, you may have seen his fun film 'They Live', starring Rowdy...Looper - The Trailer You've Been Waiting For
Rian Johnson directed the films 'Brick' and 'The Brothers Bloom', and if you haven't seen these films (or at least haven't seen 'Brick' then I can understand why you aren't going bananas about 'Looper'. That said, if you do know the quality of Johnson's work, then you SHOULD be going bananas right now. 'Prometheus'-level bananas. Looper is just your typical tale of a time-travelling hitman, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who enjoys his work, his pay, and the fact that he time travel won't...Little Girl Joins The Dark Side
If you had to fight Darth Vader, and he gave you the option to turn to The Dark Side, would you? Think about it. The Dark Side has cookies. Also, you wouldn't get chopped in half with a light sabre five seconds after you said "No. Noooo! I'll never turn to the Dark Side." You'd be lucky to escape with both hands. All this - if you weren't contemplating turning to the Dark Side. But what if you are in fact, evil? The Dark Side? Awesome! Were do I sign up? Force Lightning? Choking...Guillermo Del Toro Says No To Mountains of Madness
In yet another gut-blow to fans of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy director, Guillermo Del Toro, the Mexican filmmaker has announced that he won't be directing the much anticipated HP Lovecraft epic, 'At the Mountains of Madness'. The film was to produced with the help of James Cameron in 3-D, and was to have a budget of around $US 150M. Sadly, Del Toro has revealed to the world that "Madness has gone dark. The 'R' did us in. The film was to be a big budget, classy take on a mind-bending horror...All New Thor Trailer Reveals A New World for Marvel
The second full Thor trailer is out, and it's the best yet. More conventional in its 'here's the best bits and a rough outline of the story' than previous outings, it has detailed pics of Valhalla, and gives you a good look at the introduction of Thor to Earth, with some trademark arrogance and Viking-style eating. Looks like director Kenneth Brannagh isn't shying away from humour in this one. Tasering people is funny, right? The production values look tremendous, and whilst the story looks...X-Men: First Class. Re-establishing Faith in The Superhero Movie
The trailer for X-Men: First Class has been released, and it's a doozy. The film, directed by Kick-Ass's Matthew Vaughn, will be released on June 3 in the US. Starring James McEvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Kevin Bacon and Rose Byrne, this looks to be the goods. Interesting to note that Vaughn was originally slated for the third X-Men movie, but was kicked off in favour of Brett Rattner, much to the detriment of the X-Men franchise. After the critical success of his self-financed...Hellboy Ii: The Golden Army Review
Released Aug 28 Starring Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Luke Goss, Seth Macfarlane, Jeffrey Tambor Director Guillermo Del Toro Rated M It would perhaps be fairer to say that this is an action-filled fairy tale, rather than a comic book movie. Whilst it's not quite just a moosh of original Hellboy plus Pan's Labyrinth, it's not too far off. But it is definitely more than that. This is a film that delivers much more than a comic book story, hero and villain. It is, at its heart, a fairy tale,...Hellboy 2 And Guillermo Del Toro - Live!
