The Week in Geek Issue # 129
Welcome back dear readers! The writer has returned from his summer sojourn, having endured such torments as extreme heat, sand flies, bluebottle stings, his father in law’s sense of humor and most horrific of all, a lack of internet access. There’s been a hell of a lot happening in recent weeks, so let’s get straight to it! Steven Spielberg’s adaption of Robopocalypse is on hold owing to budget and script reasons, but it isn’t cancelled, at least...Top 10 female action heroes
To celebrate the return of Lost Girl tonight, I’m in the mood for kick-ass screen women. With that, here’s a breakdown of my top 10 bad-ass ladies of screen entertainment. Join me as we work our way through the best action heroines film, games and TV have to offer! Buffy The high school vampire slayer and focus of a film, popular Joss Whedon TV series and a host of spin-off comics, books and games, Buffy is a hero for the ages. Still one of the coolest vampire slayers ever. Ellen...Finally: Lost Girl Season 3 Premieres this Thursday!
Now, we know you’re all utterly bonkers for new Lost Girl. We are too! That’s why SF Australia has secured the premiere of season 3 before America even get it! How cool is that? Very cool. Everyone's favourite succubus is returning to FOXTEL this Thursday in an all-new season. Not across Lost Girl yet? Never fear. Here's what you need to know about this killer supernatural series! The series follows Bo, played by gorgeous actress Anna Silk. Bo is a succubus...2013 New Year’s Entertainment Resolutions
It’s finally time to cast off the ugly shadow of 2012 once and for all. The Mayans got it wrong and we had to suffer through cruddy movies like ‘2012’ and all kinds of lousy apocalyptic spin-offs. Now, in 2013, it’s a great chance to resolve to return to the things we hold dear: Joss Whedon, classic sci-fi TV, throwing out that copy of ‘2012’ you bought for $4 on DVD—that kind of thing. Here are our 2013 New Year’s entertainment resolutions! Rewatch...The Week in Geek Issue # 128
Greetings again dear readers! As the writer’s been doing more driving practice of late (I’ve only mounted the kerb 3 times!) he has a couple of observations he’d like to share with you. 1: Sydney drivers are a pack of jerks. 2: The more I drive the more grey hairs I find in my beard. Coincidence or conspiracy? Dun dun duun! He also has to give a big shout out to the Benevolent Wifely Overlord, for an early Christmas present of a ticket to the Doctor...Movies: Is 48fps the future of 3D movies? We think so.
So I saw 'The Hobbit' yesterday—twice, in fact. Both times, the screening of the first instalment of director Peter Jackson’s new trilogy was shown in a format that we haven’t seen before in Australia. A high-framerate (HFR) version of the film, running at twice the smoothness of standard projected film, is doing the rounds in selected cinemas. So what’s the deal, then? Should you care about this new technology – which isn’t actually new at all? In...The Week in Geek Issue # 127
Welcome again dear readers! Apologies for the lack of an edition last week, but life got in the way a bit. Therefore, to make up for that we’re bringing you a bumper double edition this week, a sort of Greatest Hits, showcasing the most prominent and/or weirdest news we’ve seen in the last fortnight. We’d say we’re getting all into the Christmas spirit, but that’d be a lie. We aren’t all Scrooge though - this Dalek Christmas Tree is all manner of...Our Favourite Star Trek: The Next Generation Moments
Star Trek is, quite possibly, the most popular science fiction series of all time, surpassing Dr. Who, Star Wars, Stargate and just about any other series you can throw at it. Of Star Trek’s many variations and spin-offs, few come close to Star Trek: The Next Generation in terms of cast quality, fun storytelling and escapism. Not only are we giving away 30 Star Trek; TNG Season 2 prize packs of Blu-rays and DVDs, we’re also recounting our favourite moments from the whole Next Generation...The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - How to Prepare Yourself
I’m excited for Peter Jackson’s first instalment of The Hobbit. You should be too—and I want to help you get there. An Unexpected Journey is just around the corner (opening December 26 in Australia), and to get you in the mood, here are the five best things you can do to stir up those same feelings of magic and whimsy we all felt a decade ago when The Lord of the Rings came out! Join us, precious. Read the book Seems obvious, right? Maybe. But you’d be surprised...Firefly: Ten years on, where are they now?
Can you believe it’s been ten years since Joss Whedon’s seminal and criminally short-lived TV series, ‘Firefly’, hit screens? It seems incredible to me that a show of this quality and scope didn’t get renewed—but then, what do I know about the ins and outs of television production? Actually, I know enough to understand that shows like Firefly are a rare breed. We live in a world where garbage like ‘Two and a Half Men’ is given the royal treatment—and...
