The Week in Geek Issue # 114
Hello again dear readers!
It’s been a big week this one, what with the Mars rover landing safely, which was both a magnificent scientific achievement and caused me to wish I had $5 for every reference to The War of the Worlds and Doctor Who’s Ice Warriors I’ve heard…
The other big news this week is Joss Whedon will return for the Avengers sequel (Which has a rumoured release date already)– he’ll also be working on a new TV series (Which may or may not be Guillermo Del Toroy’s Hulk series, which is waiting on a mystery writer) and assisting with scripts for other Marvel films. Basically, he’s on retainer until 2015, which sounds great, but could get in the way of a Doctor Horrible sequel. More as we find out!
Fox may give up the rights to Galactus in order to keep their hands on Daredevil and Guardians of the Galaxy has a writer. Meanwhile, DC are said to be looking at an unexpected director for Justice League - Ben Affleck. Well, that’s certainly a different choice, but it could work. Scratch that, it turns out it was just a meeting after all. Either way, I like the idea of launching with the team up movie and then the individual character films – it’s a good contrast to Marvel and I for one hope it works.
Anyone busy preparing for the apocalypse? We’ve some recipes for cooking rats you might be interested in. There’s a couple of clips and the first episode of How to Train your Dragon: Riders of Berk and Sir Patrick Stewart and Maisie Williams have made a video about Olympic ticketing.

Mmmm, finger lickin’ good!
Writer Frank Spotnitz wants to make X Files and Millennium movies and the next Batman game won’t be written by Paul Dini. Karl Urban has talked about becoming Judge Dredd and the Doctor Who Christmas Special has it’s villain – it’s Richard E Grant, who previously played the Doctor in The Curse of Fatal Death and the audio Scream of the Shalka.
Artist Tony Moore has filed a second lawsuit over unpaid royalties for his work on The Walking Dead, HBO have released a promo for the book Inside Game of Thrones, IDW are reprinting classic Judge Dredd stories with new colouring and a Tokyo comic shop has some awesome shelving. Seriously, I want that in my house NOW. THQ have cancelled horror video game Insane, which was being written by Guillermo Del Toro, and scientists have proven that Luke Skywalker should have frozen to death on Hoth. Dear scientists, this is why you don’t get invited to the good parties. You know, in case you were wondering.
Straight from the “You fool, you’ve doomed us all!” section comes word an Alf movie is being planned and only slightly less horrifying is word of a possible reboot of the Saw films. MAKE SOMETHING NEW FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! For the Community fans there’s an Inspector Spacetime poster, we’ve some concept art from a Nightwing series that never aired, Jeremy Renner has spoken of not being thrilled at spending most of The Avengers as Loki’s puppet and there’s not one, but two Sleepy Hollow inspired TV series in the works.

Eeny meeny miny mo, pick an arrow and let it go.
On the top of this week’s ‘Things you NEED to see’ comes a seven foot long Lego model of Serenity, which is, in a word, shiny. Bryan Singer has teased some more about his Battlestar movie, the film rights to the graphic novel series The Armory Wars (Written by members of the band Coheed and Cambria) have been picked up, we’ve the first concept art for Neuromancer, the first footage from Grimm season 2 and it’s not an official renewal, but HBO’s President said he wants more Game of Thrones and True Blood on air.
There’s a new Hobbit trailer, but don’t get your hopes up -there’s only a few seconds of new footage in it. It’s been reported that only certain theatres will be screening the film in it’s 48 FPS form, given there’s not a cinema in the US that can screen it in that form at the time of writing. (That upgrade comes through in September.) Hugh Jackman is looking very hairy on the set of The Wolverine, Donald Faison (Scrubs) is in talks to play Doctor Gravity in Kick Ass 2 (Which has a Facebook page) and there’s a look at the construction of the 501st Legion’s new mascot, Roxy the Rancor. We’ve a new clip from Resident Evil 5, there’s some hope that Batman could appear in Arrow and a red band trailer for Cockney’s vs Zombies.
There’s a mighty screwed up looking trailer for Antiviral, directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of David. People obsessed enough with celebrities to want their diseases? Are you sure that hasn’t already happened? You can watch the first 10 minutes of 1920’s ghost hunters movie The Awakening, a deleted scene from The Walking Dead season 2 and some unused concept art from the Stallone Judge Dredd film that tries to look awesome, but instead resembles something even Judas Priest wouldn’t wear.

Hell bent, hell bent for leather! *throws horns*
There’s a trailer for the fantasy film Imaginareum, inspired by Finnish metal band Nightwish, some details on a new Amityville Horror prequel and Australian engineer Chris Malloy will build you a custom hoverbike prototype for the princely sum of $80,000. It’s this sort of thing that made this country great!
Despite being some earlier confusion it’s now been confirmed that Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be rated R. I was kind of hoping they would release both versions and see what happens… We’ve a trailer for a Batgirl fan series, rumour has it Torchwood star Burn Gorman has been seen on the set of Game of Thrones and after 34 years, people in the UK can finally see an uncut version of The Shining.
We’ll be seeing a TV movie on the origins of Doctor Who, written by Mark Gatiss, in time for the 50th anniversary. There’s no word on casting yet, but whoever plays William Hartnell has quite the job ahead of them. Speaking of the anniversary, David Tennant hasn’t confirmed or denied his participation, but he still has the costume! Mind you, I imagine pretty much everyone connected with the show can’t get leave the house without being bombarded by questions about it. Staying with the show, there’ll be a Who themed Monopoly set and John Barrowman and his sister Carole have written a Torchwood novel. We also have a disco version of the theme tune (Ah, the seventies…) and you can buy TARDIS tights! Now, before you say anything, no, we don’t need any ‘bigger on the inside’ jokes, OK? We’ll have no more of that thank you very much!

And that’s how it all started…
Lastly, we aren’t sure how to describe this Kiwi True Blood billboard, but the phrase ‘stop it or you’ll go blind’ comes to mind…
Quote of the Week:
Green Arrow: “Evenin', Ma'am. Team Arrow is pleased to offer a new service to all of our Star City subscribers. For no additional costs, you're free to administer a few strategic kicks to your would-be assailant here. And when I say strategic, I mean his crotch.“
