Chewbacca: The Movie

Chewbacca - The Movie, is happening.

Sadly it is not a Star Wars spin-off starring Chewbacca, but a movie about the guy who played our favourite Wookie is a good thing, right?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a film about Peter Mayhew, who played the Han Solo’s hirsute sidekick, is in the works.

Mrrrraaoorrggrrrhg.

Inferno Entertainment and director Kyle Newman are developing 'Chewie', which is set against the backdrop of the making of the 1977 sci-fi classic and follows hospital orderly Mayhew as he chases his Hollywood dreams

Newman directed the Star Wars-themed comedy, 'Fanboys', and is working from a script by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, which was on Hollywood’s 2011 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays.

The Black List has an impressive record including Source Code, Juno, Slumdog Millionaire and The King’s Speech.

The seven-foot three-inch Mayhew, who had previously appeared in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, famously said that all he had to do to get into that yak and mohair suit was stand-up. Mayhew did not even voice Chewie, whose distinctive “voice” was put together by the film’s sound designer Ben Burtt using a symphony of different animal growls.

If Chewie can make even a miniscule fraction of the nearly US$30 billion Star Wars has generated since 1977, then Mr Newman and friends will be very happy fanboys indeed. If it captures the magic of being Chewbacca, then we'll be happy too.

War of the Planets (1966) was an Italian made SciFi (it had several titles) starring Franco Nero and one of four made by the same production company including Wild Wild Planet. It was remade in 1977. They were very cheap derivative scifis, at best 'c' grade. Effects were mainly miniatures (they did it far better in Thunderbirds) and I guess because they were not English speaking, the dubbing to English was at time comical. I've seen a couple of them. They are fun matinee fare for a laugh, but pretty ordinary if you take them seriously.

You're referring there to the earlier Franco Nero War of the Planets (1966) using its Italian title
