I suppose one of the reasons I've have been so quiet is I don't see enough change on SF... eg the whole marketing campaign recently that things are changing ... I like the new SF ads, but that's all I see that has changed.
There are so many appropriate shows that can replace the current decade + long runs of the same ol same ol shows and I almost thought the campaign was going to bring new shows / new life to SciFi (SF)
I dropped by the forum to see if there's any change here... and it doesn't look like there is.
Bearfax wrote:Personally the fact that so many channels play scifi and fantasy is a plus in my mind
Since the focus is on fantasy I'm not sure how it's a plus? The whole point of having so many channels is to cater to specific markets. A plus would be arranging shows by genre. Also if the scifi channel died, we would be no worse off. The favourite scifi shows would still be played, the lost ones would remain lost. This channel adds nothing for scifi fans.
Bearfax wrote:If I dont like Sliders season 5, I'll watch Smallville or Falling Skies on Fox8
LMAO. It's more like if you don't like Buffy on the scifi channel, you can watch Teen Wolf on fox8, or ghost whisperer on arena, or John Edward on W. You are kidding yourself if you think spreading fantasy all over the place, and a few scifi shows, means you can just switch on a scifi show whenever you want.
Comparing the scifi channel to fox8 or UKTV in terms of science fiction was to illustrate how pathetic the scifi channel is, not how good the other two are.
Bearfax wrote:I've got IQHD and record everything
Then you are the only scifi fan this channel is interested in. Captain has already told us if we want to watch scifi we must do what we used to do when we only had FTA, record it. You think that is a positive for the performance of this channel?
Bearfax wrote:My only concern with SciFi Tv is that they could be rotating the shows they've got a little more between night and day to add a little variety to those without a recording device and seeing a show they're interested in only at 3 am.
That would be an improvement, however the channels apathy on this is completely in character with their efforts to show scifi. Your only concern is one small part of the much bigger problem.
Janeway wrote:I don't mind having to change the channel to watch what I want....only requires a click or two
Great attitude, if W and arena saturated themselves with scifi. The problem is changing the channel does not get one the shows one wants.
It is also the definition of stupidity to create a product aimed at a niche market, then totally ignore that market.
Captain wrote:I am just like everyone on this forum, really. I love Sci Fi.
The internet is a funny thing. People running around making all sorts of ridiculous claims, and forgetting they have posted the evidence to counter the claim themselves.
Bearfax wrote: That's why when Forever Knight, Night Stalker, the new Knight Rider and of course Dr Who came on, I was starting to get excited.
With all the scifi shows out there that we don't get to see anywhere, especially on a scifi channel, it's sad you got excited by two very old non scifi shows.
Knight Rider is another cheap remake show, but at least it's scifi. When we got Dr Who we also picked up a nasty case of Hex and Lost Girl, one step forward and two steps back should not be impressive, even though it is around here.
Bearfax wrote: I can cope with teeny bopper shows like Buffy and Hex.
You lost me there. If they want to put on some teeny bopper shows they should find some scifi ones. Between Fox8 and the channel calling itself the scifi channel they could make a teeny bopper channel for that rubbish, and that audience. They could probably make two.
Bearfax wrote:But I cant handle the increase in the reality shows which are becoming annoying and frankly poorly done. The doco on the UFO incident in the town..what was it Westal or something...in the 60s was quite reasonable.
I've got no idea where you are coming from. Westall was a documentary? Or reasonable? Westall was a perfect example of it's kind, and no improvement over the worst this channel has to offer. The "good" reality show is Ripley's, but that has just as much business being here as westall, or buffy, or the wrestling.
LOL, I saw an ad for this awhile ago and didn't realise it had anything to do with scifi. The ad was just about a girl having an accident then lying to a guy and hitting on him, then leaving for someplace, I didn't catch the destination.
I just checked out the "shows" tab, and there are currently 28 scifi shows, and 23 non scifi. Lucky this channel has Star Trek and Stargate, without them it would be 21 to 23.
ZlodeyVolk wrote:Who else thinks that Sci Fi should kick this dog of a show to the curb and finance "A Sci Fi Channel Australia Original" production of Aurora?
LMAO. I think this show perfectly suits this channel, as shown by the new reality shows this channel is proudly advertising for next month. It's scifi in name only. The people behind this channel have a similar, or worse, attitude towards scifi and scifi fans as any free to air channel at any time in history.
Bearfax wrote:At least Uncle Tom is come to save us.
Except when we got Dr Who, we also got Hex and Lost Girl. One step forward, two steps back. And sadly, that was actually progress for this channel.
supreme wrote:I like this show to,,,,,,,,,,,,Nice and light,,,,,,,,,,,
Nothing wrong with light, or fantasy, but they are everywhere. It a shame that the SciFi channel is just another weak, light general entertainment channel, a poor twin of Fox8. When Fox8 are done with their vampires, witches and werewolves they will be unloaded onto this channel, and we will be expected to be greatful for the scraps.
Lizzie1701 wrote:I love Lost Girl! It is well acted,
Taste is a personal thing, assessment of acting ability is not. The only place I have seen "Lost Girl" level of acting is porn.
How old is Kenzi meant to be? She seems like a fairly immature teen, but she is also an alcoholic, which doesn't necessarily mean she is older since she is also a street kid.
Bearfax wrote:Most shows like Firefly, Star Gate, Battlestar Galactica even Babylon 5, despite their briliance give an impression that the next planet or star is just down the road.
Firefly is set in one solar system, with just the planets and moons of that system? And even in that setting space is vast. Considering it is just one solar system, Firefly does quite well at showing the emptiness, loneliness of space.
B5 is quite good at showing the vastness of space too, with hours of travel to get from a jumpgate to a "nearby" ship or planet, and even gate to gate travel takes time. Andromeda has time lag in communications which illustates the massive distances within a system. Stargate doesn't show distance too often, but they mention it all the time comparing gate travel to space travel. Star Trek has transporters, but warp travel takes time, and Star Trek is basically set in part of one galaxy. It takes advanced aliens to even get to another part of the galaxy.
What scifi universe would I live in, Star Trek TNG, as a Q. Then I could create as many pocket universe as I wanted, even in the theme of shows, scifi or otherwise.
