Ever noticed the famous 'Ring of Fire', that encircles the Pacific Ocean and caused by various continental plates sliding against each other. Thus is where most volcanoes and earthquakes originate. The worst are around Japan, The Aleutians, Indonesia and of course the west coast of the Americas.

But New Zealand is bisected by two of those plates and its North Is volcanoes and South Island Alps are the consequence. Concerning Australia (which has a benign land mass) is the fact that though a couple of serious earthquakes have hit the South island east coast recently, causing significant damage to Christchurch, in fact most of the sliding plate activity is just off the west coast of South Island.

A major and very possible earthquake in that region would result in tsunamis heading where? You got it. The east coast of Oz from Hobart to Brisbane. And the land lies pretty low on that coast doesnt it? Hmmm.....a movie maybe?

The talk of tectonic plate shifts have been going back and forth for a while, California could be lost completely one day if the plates shift and fold in the right way. Luckily for us in SA, when all the last batch of Tsunami's went around the globe, papers came out and said that we have only a 1% chance of being hit by a Tsunami as Kangaroo Island would slow it down.....LOL poor buggers, here's hoping they would get enough notice to clear out first, the ferry from the mainland doesn't move that fast. I think this idea has been done a few times but from an Australian point of view would be cool instead of an American one. Imagine if Tassie and Kangaroo Island were completely abolished....Australia would look weird without Tassie on a map!

If it's real life, it can't be "sci-fi".

Are you saying Well's newspaper reports of the invsaion of the Martians was not real life? Mind you Sci-Fi is often about what is possible and often later real life. The gap between reality and fiction is often separated by only a small bridge of knowledge or time.

Exactly so. A situation or accomplishment might start as science fiction but, once it becomes reality, it ceases to be science fiction.
